PCOS
PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) is a hormonal imbalance that often starts around the time an individual starts menstruating, but can be diagnosed at any time. The cause is unknown. PCOS is a common cause of female infertility, and can be mild enough that infertility is the only symptom.
Signs and symptoms of PCOS include:

-
Irregular, infrequent periods
-
Periods that last many days
-
Excess facial and body hair
-
Multiple small ovarian cysts with immature eggs
-
Acne
-
Skin tags and skin darkening
-
Obesity
PCOS is diagnosed by history, physical exam, blood tests, and a pelvic ultrasound. There are several medications and lifestyle changes that are effective in treating and managing PCOS. The right choice of treatment depends on your symptoms and whether you want to become pregnant.
PCOS does raise your risk for several other conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, and mood disorders, so a proper diagnosis is important to give you information about your health.
