GYN Surgeries
Gynecologic surgeries can treat many different issues or symptoms and can often be performed using minimally invasive techniques (vagina, hysteroscopic, laparoscopic or robotic), which involve less pain and faster recovery.
Some of the most common procedures include the following:
-
Hysteroscopy — involves looking at the inside of the uterus using a thin camera called a hysteroscope in order to diagnose and treat a variety of conditions such as polyps, fibroids, and heavy menstrual bleeding.
-
D&C — stands for Dilatation and Curettage and entails scraping the uterine lining as part of the diagnosis or treatment of abnormal bleeding or to remove tissue after a miscarriage.
-
Diagnostic laparoscopy — includes inserting a thin camera or laparoscope through a very small incision in the abdomen to visualize the uterus, ovaries, and Fallopian tubes and surrounding structures to help diagnose and/or treat a number of conditions in the pelvis.
- Ovarian cyst excision — removal of ovarian cysts and can be accomplished with a laparoscopic procedure using small incisions or may require a larger incision and a more invasive approach.
-
Tubal ligation — surgical sterilization that involves interrupting or removing the Fallopian tubes, usually using a laparoscopic approach.
- Myomectomy — removal of fibroids can be accomplished using a variety of techniques (hysteroscopic, laparoscopic, robotic, open) depending on the size and location of the fibroids.
-
Hysterectomy — the removal of the uterus and usually also the cervix and Fallopian tubes, often with a minimally invasive approach. The ovaries may also be removed depending on the age of the patient and the reason for the procedure. This surgery may require a larger incision, or open technique, especially in cases involving large fibroids.
-
Pelvic organ prolapse surgery — surgical treatment of prolapse (descent or bulge) of the uterus, bladder, rectum, or vagina. Depending on which pelvic organs are involved, the surgery may be done through incisions in the vagina or abdomen, and may involve removing tissue, creating slings, or using mesh. This type of surgery is often done by specialists called urogynecologists, or pelvic reconstructive surgeons.
