Fibroids
Uterine fibroids (leiomyomas) are growths of muscle that can form in the uterus. They are usually benign (not cancerous) and are quite common. They can grow or shrink over time, often linked to hormonal changes that occur over the lifespan (such as in pregnancy or menopause).
Fibroids do not always cause symptoms. However, larger or multiple fibroids can present with a variety of symptoms, including:
-
Heavy, painful, or irregular periods
-
Abdominal enlargement or a feeling of fullness
-
Pain during sex
-
Low back pain
-
Urinary problems
-
Constipation
Diagnosis of fibroids can be by physical exam or imaging methods, including ultrasound and MRI.
Fibroids may cause symptoms that decrease your quality of life. They may also interfere with pregnancy due to their size or location. Fibroids can be managed with various medications or with several different surgical methods. The right management for you depends on the size and location of the fibroids, your life stage, and any plans that you may have for pregnancy. This should be discussed and decided with your doctor.
