Ovarian Cysts
An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac on or in the ovary. They can form as part of the natural menstrual cycle, though there are other varieties. Most, but not all, ovarian cysts are benign and cause no problems at all. However, larger cysts can be associated with several symptoms, including:
-
Pelvic pain or back pain, especially on one side
-
Feeling of fullness in the abdomen
-
Pain during sex
-
Painful or irregular periods
-
Bowel or urinary problems
It is important to talk to your provider if you are experiencing any of these issues. Although usually benign, some ovarian cysts can indicate more significant problems such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), infection, or cancer. Rarely, severe complications can occur with ovarian cysts, including rupture and torsion, which are associated with severe pain. Ovarian cysts can be diagnosed using a pelvic exam, ultrasound, or laparoscopy.
